Domaine des Varoilles, based in Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, takes its name from the Clos des Varoilles, a Premier Cru monopole first planted in the 12th century. Over time, the estate expanded its holdings to about 10 hectares across eight appellations, including other notable monopoles such as La Romanée. A major turning point came in 1990 with the arrival of Gilbert Hammel, of Swiss descent, who revitalized the domaine and established its reputation for producing supple, approachable yet structured Gevrey-Chambertin wines. Today, Domaine des Varoilles is recognized for its unique monopole vineyards and its ability to craft wines that balance tradition with accessibility, making it a distinctive presence in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits.
