Winemaker Notes
Bottled in early 2018, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Proprietary Red Wine is a little closed, slowly unfurling to reveal black cherries, crème de cassis and plum pudding with nuances of potpourri, baking spices and tilled soil plus wafts of garrigue and wild sage. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated with exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic poise and depth with a long, decadently fruited finish.

For over two decades, Harlan Estate has been committed to creating a California "first growth" wine estate. Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate is set in the western hills of Oakville, rising above the fabled Napa Valley benchlands.
Carved from the raw land and built for generations, the estate is over 240 acres of natural spendor, 15% of which are under vine, planted to the classic varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Rigorous selection is employed at every stage of this wine's development. Many components, though singularly attractive and possessing lavish attributes, are not utilized in the final blends for Bond. This provides us the opportunity to create a second wine. This blend, offered under the Matriarch label, will always be evocative of its pedigree and distinct in its hillside character.

The 2013 Matriarch, which may well be the finest Matriarch made to date, could easily stand on its own as a single-vineyard offering. Made from the odds and ends of the single-vineyard wines, nevertheless this is pretty great wine, and I joked with the winemaking team that maybe their selection process was too draconian. Dense purple, with notes of mulberry, blackberry, chocolate, cocoa and espresso, the wine is dense, full-bodied, opulent, and a total hedonistic turn-on.

With beautiful pale straw color and a slight green hue, this Chardonnay greetsyou with vibrant aromas of lime zest, Meyer lemon, green apple and bright whitepear, accented by a delicate mineral touch, white flowers and toasted almonds.Known for being a fruit forward wine, it offers crisp, bright acidity on the palatewith dominant lemon and mineral flavor. The citrus acidity rounds out to a long,velvety texture, with lingering and balanced notes of pineapple and Bosc pear.

In 2019 we produced Cabernet Sauvignon from three vineyards in Oakville to create this robust and generous Cabernet Sauvignon. This blend is dominated by Oakville Ranch Vineyard. Located in the hills among famous neighbors Dalla Valle, Pedregal and Backus vineyards, Oakville Ranch produces powerful, rich, structured wines. Cabernet Sauvignon wines from two other vineyards along Skellenger Lane were blended in to add expressive fruit character and lush tannins. The resulting wine offers layers of dark red and blue fruit flavors with hints of cocoa and dried herbs. This is a rich and vibrant wine that can be enjoyed now, yet will age for 15+ years.

This blend of our generous and supple 2018 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is dominated by Oakville Ranch Vineyard. Located in the hills among famous neighbors Dalla Valle, Pedregal and Backus vineyards, Oakville Ranch produces powerful, rich, structured wines. Cabernet Sauvignon wines made from two other vineyards along Skellenger Lane were blended in to add expressive fruit character and lush tannins. Each component of this blend spent four weeks fermenting on skins to ensure that the tannins and fruit flavors were balanced. The resulting wine is rich and vibrant, offering vivid flavors of blackberry, raspberry, cassis and mocha.

One of the best values in the Sojourn portfolio, the 2019 Sonoma Coast Pinot noir brings together eight unique lots from sites that comprise several of our single vineyard designate bottlings. This 2019 blend showcases a higher proportion of Walala and Gap’s Crown Vineyard components, resulting in greater intensity and rich texture. The 2019 vintage offers balance and depth, with multiple layers of dark cherry, nutmeg and earth, leading to a long finish. It is drinking exceptionally well now with a fresh, complex bouquet that draws you into the glass. This wine is the real deal.

The 2021 vintage offers exceptional depth and intensity. Gap’s Crown Vineyard grapes matured at an even pace allowing us to pick each block at optimal maturity. We fermented the entire 828 block 100% whole cluster, adding verve and spice notes to the finished blend. Flavors are robust with aromas of dark berry and cherry with hints of baking spice. Gap’s Crown is a premier vineyard, sitting at a windy 800 feet with distinctive volcanic soils. Much of the wine’s intensity derives from vine stress caused by the site’s steep slopes and rocky soils.

Our 2016 bottling of the Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot noir continues to affirm this vineyard as one of the brightest stars in California. After the 2014’s #35 ranking on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2016, and the 2015’s 95-point score from Robert Parker, the 2016 follows strongly with robust flavors and excellent structure. Much of this wine’s concentration derives from the site’s steep slopes and rocky soils, complemented by severe drought conditions and the tiny berries that resulted. The wine’s signature dark cherry aroma is enhanced by 10% whole cluster fermentation, adding depth and texture for a long complex finish.

This 2023 vintage wine offers tremendous depth and nuance. Gap’s Crown Vineyard responded well to the cooler weather conditions and matured at an even pace, allowing us to pick each block at optimal maturity. We again fermented the clone 828 block with stems included, adding verve and spice notes to the finished blend. The 2023 vintage has a mix of red cherry and darker berry flavors with baking spice notes. This exceptional vineyard and distinctive volcanic soils delivered a beautiful wine again with the 2023 vintage.

These diverse vineyards produced light crops in 2020 due to drought conditions, with each vineyard offering layers of robust flavors. An expressive nose of stone fruit and apple leads to rich flavors and an intriguing mix of depth and vibrancy. Fermentation in 30% new French oak barrels adds rich texture and complex character.

We are fortunate to work with two outstanding Durell Vineyard Chardonnay blocks that blend with synergy and result in exceptional wines each vintage. These two blocks of Old Wente clone Chardonnay have formed the Sojourn Durell Chardonnay since 2012. Both blocks were picked at night to retain freshness and allow us to extract only the highest quality juice. This wine offers a unique combination of apple and citrus fruit aromas with layers of minerality. It is expansive yet balanced, with great acidity, firm structure, and a long finish.

The small clusters of the 2022 vintage allowed us to make Chardonnays with appealing intensity, balance, and nuance. Our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay showcases three of the top vineyards in the region – Sangiacomo, Durell, and Gap’s Crown – with the goal of creating a cuvée that illustrates the varietal’s exceptional character across the region. We picked and fermented each component of this blend separately and aged them all for 11 months in 30% new French oak barrels. The resulting blend offers compelling new world aromas with fresh acidity and focus, reminiscent of the old world.

In 2014, Decanter awarded our 2011 Estate Ferguson the International Trophy for Best Bordeaux Blend in the World! In 2016, the 2013 Ferguson won the International Trophy for Best New World Bordeaux Blend from the Six Nations Wine Challenge.
