2022 | TP 95 Napa Valley benefited from abundant winter rainfall; this set the stage for mild spring weather leading to an even, early budbreak in April 2022. Overall, the growing season brought plenty of sunshine, with temperatures typically hovering in the high 80s to low 90s. However, the beginning of September saw a sweltering heatwave throughout California that accelerated berry ripeness levels and Brix accumulation. Fortunately, cooler weather followed, giving the vines a timely break and preserving the balanced flavors Napa Valley is known for. We hand-harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon from Carol’s Vineyard into half-ton bins on September 14th and 15th. 2008  | V 97 The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus is a beautifully delineated wine endowed with tons of personality and sheer class. The wine comes alive in the glass, with crushed rose petals, dark raspberry jam, licorice and spices. There is an exotic element to the fruit that is highly appealing. Today the tannins are quite firm, suggesting the wine needs at least a few more years in the cellar.  2018 | JD 97 Aromas of mint, dark berries and black olives follow through to a medium to full body with lightly chewy and layered tannins that are long and focused. Wonderfully refined and airy, the 2021 impresses with its total harmony. It is especially elegant. Whether that is due to the vintage, a tendency to pick on the earlier side these days, or the combination of sites, the 2021 is magnificent, if a bit less showy than it used to be. This energetic, structured wine, blended with 25% Cabernet Franc, has excellent concentration and can be held for several years to further develop its complexity.  About Winery Mayacamas Vineyards was founded as Fisher & Sons in 1889 by German immigrant John Henry Fisher, who built the winery on Mount Veeder in Napa Valley. After the devastating 1906 earthquake, the winery was sold at auction and fell into disrepair for several years. In 1941, Jack and Mary Taylor purchased the property, renamed it Mayacamas, and established the winery's classic label and iconography. 2017 | WA 93 The 2017 Pinot Noir Bucher Vineyard has a medium ruby color and offers woodsmoke, cranberries, Bing cherries, dried flowers, citrus peel and saline aromas on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and youthfully coiled, taking its time to open up to tobacco-laced fruits. It has firm, grainy tannins and juicy acidity, finishing long and woodsy.
